"Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force! Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."

George Washington.

"When all government, in little as in great things, shall be drawn to Washington as the Center of all Power, it will render powerless the checks provided of one government on another and will become as venal and oppressive as the government from which we separated."

THOMAS JEFFERSON 1821- In a letter to Gideon Granger.
Writings of Thomas Jefferson.  Blessings of Abundance and Health in all things Good

" ... There will always be a party for giving more to the rulers, that the rulers may be able in return to give more to them. Hence as all history informs us, there has been in every State & Kingdom a constant kind of warfare between the governing & governed: the one striving to obtain more for its support, and the other to pay less. And this has alone occasioned great convulsions, actual civil wars, ending either in dethroning of the Princes, or enslaving of the people. Generally indeed the ruling power carries its point, the revenues of princes constantly increasing, and we see that they are never satisfied, but always in want of more."

-- Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to the Federal Constitutional Convention, as recorded by James Madison on June 2, 1787.

The Future of the USA

An unbalanced budget isn't just a bookkeeping curiosity. Every debt incurred on your behalf by the politicians means you have to pay a larger interest cost every year.
  • Today we're paying $275 billion a year in interest expense, which means we continue to pay for long-forgotten schemes by the politicians of yesteryear - schemes that were going to make health care more affordable, that would improve education, that were going to clean up the environment.

Those schemes failed, and the politicians who created them retired with generous pensions, leaving us to pay increased interest expenses year after year. We must get rid of that interest expense by retiring the federal debt - immediately and entirely.

But first, we must put a stop to the growing debt by balancing the budget now!
  • Young, articulate candidates like Jo Jorgensen - the party's vice presidential candidate in 1996 are helping to broaden the Libertarian Party's base of support by appealing to 18 to 25-year-old voters.

Republican and Democratic politicians want to keep increasing federal spending, and pretend that a future Congress will balance the budget by making spending cuts the current Congress is unwilling to make.
The Libertarian Party would balance the budget in one year in office by reducing government spending. We would also sell off federal assets, and use the proceeds to pay off the federal debt. Entirely. And forever.
